this weekend is the thirtieth anniversary of the Miami Book Fair International, if book fairs remind you of those catalogues they would pass out in elemntary school, colorful, Scholastic "chapter books" and a few fold out tables in your school library or cafeteria - you have another thing coming.

The book fair, which formally started on Sunday (Nov. 17), includes talks, lectures and all sorts of live, in person, off the page events. Many of the events are free, but require requesting tickets in advance, so I'm giving you the heads up now.

More than 250 vendors ranging from publishers to antiquitarian collectors show off their books in an outdoor Street Fair Friday - Sunday.

Yesterday on WLRN I heard Mitchell Kaplan from Books & Books talk about how Miami should have great pride in a book fair that's lasted for thirty years, and he's right. He also told a great story about Hunter S. Thompson's appearance, or lack-thereof, at the fair a few years back.

See you at the Anjelica Huston event on Friday night.
