sedano's ¡sigue la tradición!

where else but Sedano's are there over a dozen variations of aloe beverages? Do you drink those? Someone fill me in on aloe drinks! At Sedano's, there are fridges in the center of the wide fish aisles packed with plantain leaves - perfect for grilling fish in a perfect little natural parcel (dinner party recipe, here we come). The labels are in Spanish. There's a surprising amount of Asian options. The graphic design is colorful, a little bit raw and, in some ways, very beautiful.

Can you tell the experience is a little overwhelming? For me, a trip to the grocery store is better than the mall. Really. I've never been able to remember which mall is Dadeland and which is The Falls, I hate department stores for more than bad dressing room lighting, and I'd prefer a Whole Foods gift card to Macy's anyday. For the curious foodie, a trip to Sedano's is a must. I decided to go midday on a weekday and treat it like a little field trip. Take time to explore the aisles, I'm glad I did. Seriously guys, THE ALOE DRINKS.

Each aisle held something that tripped me up and had me yelling at my boyfriend to come back. The tiny packages of guayaba had my wheels spinning for beautiful presentation at a fancy dinner party. A simple plate, a tiny wrapped guayaba in the middle. So cute. So simple. I would call this something like rustic elegance - but we're talking about Sedano's. It's laughable, but not totally unrealistic.

Sedano's is the Cuban grandmother special. It's where my mom made me to go get paper towels in an emergency. It's not known to be the Dinner Party Inspiration Center of Miami, but it should be.

more aloe. Right between the tomatillos and artichokes. They're a pretty bunch of green spiky things.

so many juice options! while packages and bottled juices always come second to a fresh juice, these Looza juices are so tasty and amazing when mixed in a smoothie or guzzled after stepping into that hot humid sauna that we call "outside."

more packaging that I found appealing in a kind of ugly way. there's something about just slapping on a not-particularly interesting pictures of vegetables onto something that makes me really want to cook with it.
