mosquitos are so useless that even a scientist who's been studying them for 20 years admits she'd really rather they just be wiped off the face of the Earth - she says it would only really make a difference in the Arctic tundra, and that's ffffaaarrrr. We can thank those pesky 100 million year old insects for the ubiquitous red welts around our ankles this time of year and the total refusal to leave the house when the sun is going down.

If you're tired of spraying yourself with chemical-filled bug spray and are ready to give some natural alternatives a chance, check out this helpful article by Gardenista including everything as simple as ice and aloe and as inventive as making a peppermint paste.

Side note, I went to a holistic dog store on US1 and 64th Street called Natural K9 because my dog was really itchy and the pills the vet had him popping weren't working. The really helpful sales girl recommended all sorts of fancy stuff to try including boutique artisanal dog food from Canada and an organic, all natural spray that she admitted she uses on herself sometimes. So I've tried it. It works. The active ingredients are tea tree oil, chamomile, witch hazel, sage and more things that you can actually read. It's called Richard's Organics if you're willing to give the Natural K9 route a try too.
